Tulips
Expecting beautiful tulips again in our gardens

Welcoming Spring here at Rockhaven!

This year we have many projects planned. We will be replacing an old wood and mesh fence with a black metal one, we will rebuild a portion of a stone retaining wall, and we will replace original front door and decorative garage lights with a uniform style and color. It should harmonize the look of the property.

Next year we will continue our gutter replacement project that we started last year, as we have already changed out more gutters this year.

And there’s more…

We are planning to have a welcoming picnic this year. Due to obvious reasons, the picnics during the past two years have been primarily for residents and Board only. We expect this year to include family and friends.

Rockhaven provides the grilled meats, condiments, corn on the cob, and drinks. Our residents and guests provide the sides and desserts. The date has not been confirmed, but it will be in August. We will keep you posted!!

Message from the Executive Director

Andrea Black, Executive Director

After a relatively mild winter, we thought spring had finally arrived. Now the temperature has dipped back down. I have had to shoo some small birds out of a broken street lamp before they could build a nest. There are blooming daffodils in front of the

Administration House, and soon we are expecting yellow, purple, white, and a variety of pink tulips to appear. Although a bumpy start, spring will be arriving soon.

And, I want to express gratitude for the strong team of Board members who bless Rockhaven. We have two members with human resource backgrounds, one with a law degree, one who is a licensed architect, two with broad gardening experience, one who has a banking background, and one who has longevity, having been on our Board for 20 years this coming December. Each one brings expertise and, more importantly, strong metaphysical support. Thank you all!

Andrea

The past two years have been a joy as I have gotten to know our residents, Rockhaven, and the Glastonbury area. My husband, Carl, and I have settled into our new home. We have shared meals with residents in our new home and at events on the property. The summer picnics and Christmas parties have been fun to host. Barbara Entress, my predecessor, has continued her summer rhubarb crisp tradition.

New Sheds at RockhavenA number of large projects have been completed. We have renovated four and a half apartments since I have been here. Barbara began one renovation and handed over her team of contractors, which has made each renovation smooth. Rockhaven purchased two garden sheds, which are snugged up to one of the garages and hold tools, equipment, and extra tables and chairs. A stone wall has been rebuilt, using cement to strengthen and secure it. And lastly, spray foam has been sprayed into the attic of the Administration House to help moderate the extreme temperatures of winter and summer.

As for the coming year, another long stone wall needs to be rebuilt, and since 22 tree stumps were removed from the property, new trees need to be planted to replace those old friends.

Glastonbury, CT Community CenterThe town of Glastonbury has been a wonderful surprise! Quaint at every corner, it is still a vibrant, active community. I have attended the monthly Ukulele Band events at the Community Center. When I first heard about it, I thought ‘how hokey’ but was up for trying new things. The band itself is about 40 strong – yes, 40 members of all ages. They sit up in front and play, while the audience of about 150 sings along to the songs reading the words displayed on a screen. The songs are old (the Irish Lullaby) to popular (Beatles and Elvis) to folk (This Land) to fun (Splish Splash). It lasts one hour and is joyous.

I have also been recruited to help with the Civil Preparedness program in town. They walk in the Memorial Day Parade and help with crowd control at the summer outdoor concerts and at the Apple Festival in October.

Along with a group of Rockhaven residents, I attended a Coast Guard band presentation at the Glastonbury High School across the street one evening. I have met a local resident who wears a Santa suit at Christmas, sits on a nearby bench and waves at the cars going by even on the coldest days. I really look forward to more Glastonbury connections and activities.

Christmas PartyI want to thank everyone who has helped make me feel warmly welcomed to Rockhaven. I arrived the week of Thanksgiving and was quickly invited to a family’s holiday celebration. I have been literally and figuratively embraced in this loving community. My husband Carl has been in Washington State getting our house ready to sell. At Christmas time I was welcomed to a large family gathering over the weekend and a Christmas feast on Christmas day with another group. We also had our traditional Rockhaven Christmas party in December.

Not knowing Connecticut, I have set out to visit all the churches in the state. I expect to move out farther to visit Christian Science churches in other local states.
